I am a multidisciplinary Chicago-based artist, whose primary medium is ceramics. I use clay to express my lived experience and explore the meaning of home. My work invites viewers to explore the intricacies of the world we inhabit, while offering a unique perspective on the familiar. I encourage viewers to delve deeper into their own understanding of the concept of home, while ultimately unraveling new layers of meaning and identity. With each work, I explore the fibrous connection between the physical and emotional aspects of home, and our individual and collective identities.
While seeking inspiration from the environment that surrounds me, I interpret my experiences in abstract, visual forms, through hand-built sculpture. I depict sensuous experiences and moments of wonder, and approach art making through a lens of materiality and intuitive expression. I explore play as a subversive act to refute dominant culture. My tactile art-making process is a meditation, a quiet challenge to the rigid frameworks that have historically confined and defined women. Feminism, in my practice, is not only a theme, but a lens through which the world is re-envisioned.
Clay is a living creature; it breathes, alters form, and demands attention. One must understand and become familiar with the needs of clay, to speak through clay. The smell of earth, its flesh-like texture, and its endless potential, draw me to clay. Through the intricate and skilled process of hand-building, I create sculptures that embrace the materiality of clay. I honor the history and origin of clay, while exploring its properties to create engaging, emotive sculptures. I seek to evoke a sense of connection and reverence for the natural world, reminding viewers of the powerful and transformative properties of clay.
